Upcoming Show: Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival 9/26-28/08

My piece, Looking (baboon) will be included in the 2008 Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival, which will be September 26-28, 2008 in Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York.

In this video projection, a baboon peers out of a window, surveying the world around him. His expressive features encourage passers-by to consider what the animal is responding to and why, and to compare these responses to their own visceral experiences of being alive. Preview the video here.

Location:
Ground floor window on Pearl St. between Plymouth St. and John St. (side window of Melville House publishers)

Projection will be on view from 6-9 pm Friday, Sept 26. - Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008.

New Work: Zoo Pictures

New Work: Signs of Life

These pieces are part of a series of short videos that isolate small movements and gestures in animals that serve as markers for the state of being "alive." By drawing attention to the subject animal's own consciousness, these pieces encourage us to think about what the animal is responding to and why, and to compare these responses to own visceral experience of being alive.

Untitled (lizard eye) - INSTALLATION DOCUMENTATION

Untitled (lizard eye) was a video installation in an elevator consisting of a portable DVD player inside a metal box attached to the inside of the elevator just above the buttons. The DVD player showed a short video of a lizard's eye slowly opening and closing, its pupil dilating and contracting as it appeared to watch the elevator's passengers. This piece was installed at 20 Jay Street in Brooklyn, NY during the 2007 Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival.

The disembodied eye references not only surveillance in a traditional sense, but also a kind of "scientific gaze" and the notion of watching as a means to create factual knowledge about the world around us.
